How to Flip an Image in PowerPoint

PowerPoint makes flipping easier than most Office apps — the Flip option works on images, shapes, icons, and even grouped objects. Below is the step-by-step for desktop, web, and mobile, plus fixes for the cases where the menu goes missing.

Flip an image in PowerPoint for Windows or Mac

This works in PowerPoint 2016, 2019, 2021, and Microsoft 365. The ribbon layout is the same on both operating systems.

  1. Click the image on your slide. Selection handles (small circles) appear around it.
  2. Go to the Picture Format tab in the ribbon. On older versions and on Mac this may say just Format. The tab only shows up while an image is selected.
  3. On the right side of the ribbon, click the Rotate dropdown (the icon with two triangles forming a circle).
  4. Choose Flip Horizontal to mirror the image left-to-right, or Flip Vertical to mirror it top-to-bottom.

The change is instant. PowerPoint keeps the original pixel data and applies the flip as a transform, so you can flip it back without quality loss.

Flipping shapes, icons, and grouped objects

The Flip option is not limited to photos. It works on anything you can select:

  • Shapes and text boxes. Select the shape, open the Shape Format tab (not Picture Format), and use the same Rotate → Flip Horizontal / Flip Vertical path. Text inside the shape flips along with it.
  • Icons and SVGs. Select the icon, open the Graphics Format tab, and use the Rotate dropdown. Same two flip options.
  • Groups. If you group multiple objects (Ctrl+G), you can flip the entire group as one unit. Every element inside mirrors relative to the group's center.

PowerPoint Online — flip works here too

Unlike Word Online (which has no flip), PowerPoint for the web supports flipping. Select the image, go to the Picture tab, click the Rotate dropdown, and choose Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical. The menu labels are the same as in the desktop app.

PowerPoint on iPhone and Android

The mobile app does not have a Flip option in the image menu. You can rotate by dragging the rotation handle, but mirroring is not available. Two workarounds:

  • Open the presentation on a desktop or in the web app at office.com and flip the image there.
  • Flip the image before inserting it. The flip image tool runs in mobile Safari and Chrome — mirror the file on your phone and drop it into your slide.

When the Flip option is missing or greyed out

A few things can block flipping in PowerPoint:

  • Locked placeholder. If the image sits inside a content placeholder that is locked in the Slide Master, the Rotate menu may be disabled. Move the image outside the placeholder (cut and paste onto the slide), flip it, and move it back.
  • Protected presentation. If the file is marked as Final or is password-protected for editing, image transforms are blocked. Remove the protection first (File → Info → Protect Presentation).
  • Embedded OLE object. Charts, embedded Excel tables, and other OLE objects do not support the Flip option. You would need to export them as an image first, then flip the image.

Add Flip to the Quick Access Toolbar

If you flip images often, you can put the Flip buttons on the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) so they are always one click away — no need to switch to Picture Format first.

  1. Go to File → Options → Quick Access Toolbar.
  2. In the "Choose commands from" dropdown, select All Commands.
  3. Scroll to Flip Horizontal, select it, and click Add. Repeat for Flip Vertical.
  4. Click OK. The two buttons now appear in the top-left toolbar on every slide.

Each QAT button gets an automatic Alt+number shortcut (shown in the tooltip when you press Alt). So if Flip Horizontal is the third QAT icon, pressing Alt+3 flips the selected image instantly.

PowerPoint vs. Word and Google Slides — flipping compared

PowerPoint has the smoothest flip workflow in the Office suite. Word has the same ribbon path but can not flip multiple images at once. Google Docs requires routing images through a Drawing. Google Slides, like PowerPoint, has a direct Flip option under Arrange → Rotate, so the experience is comparable if you work in Google's ecosystem.

Flipping a whole batch of slide images

PowerPoint handles multi-selection flips better than Word, but it still requires you to select each image manually. If you have a deck with dozens of images that all need mirroring — product photos for a catalogue, for example — it is faster to flip the files before inserting them.

The flip image tool processes multiple images in a single pass. Drop them in, pick the axis, download the mirrored copies, and insert them into your slides already flipped.

Need the flipped file before it goes into your deck?

Drop your image in, pick horizontal or vertical, take the mirrored copy out. Works on any device, no sign-up, nothing leaves your browser. Flip your image now →

Flipping images in PowerPoint — quick answers

Where is the Flip option in PowerPoint?
Select the image, open the Picture Format tab (or Shape Format for shapes), click Rotate on the right side of the ribbon, and choose Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical.
Can I flip an image in PowerPoint Online?
Yes. PowerPoint for the web supports Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical under Picture → Rotate. Unlike Word Online, the web version of PowerPoint has full flip support.
Why can't I flip my image in PowerPoint?
The most common cause is that the image is part of a placeholder that is locked by the slide layout. Try moving the image out of the placeholder first, or edit the Slide Master to unlock the placeholder.
Does flipping an image in PowerPoint reduce quality?
No. PowerPoint stores a transformation matrix on top of the original pixel data. Flipping and un-flipping does not re-compress or degrade the image.
Can I flip multiple images at once in PowerPoint?
Yes. Hold Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) and click each image, then use the Rotate menu — Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical apply to the entire selection. This works better in PowerPoint than in Word, where the option often disappears with multi-selection.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to flip an image in PowerPoint?
There is no default shortcut, but you can add one by customizing the Quick Access Toolbar: File → Options → Quick Access Toolbar, search for Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical, and add them. They then get Alt+number shortcuts automatically.
